About the Event
Oysters filter nutrients and particles from the water and provide a habitat for marine life. Unfortunately, oyster health is in a decline worldwide and it is estimated that oyster populations have been reduced by 85% globally.
Oyster shells are collected weekly from local restaurants as part of the Florida Oceanographic Society shell recycling program. Then, with the aid of volunteers, they restore oyster habitat by constructing reefs with the bagged shells. Our club will help bag oyster shells as part of this program.
